Individualized Major Themes

Summarized here are examples of individualized major concepts followed by students in the past. The listings here are by no means exhaustive, but do give an idea of the plans of study that students have followed through our program. Some of the departments from which students have drawn courses for their interdisciplinary majors are listed with the major titles. We can not stress enough the important role that internships, work experience, study abroad, research, and independent study play in an individualized major.

Popular Individualized Major Themes

Currently there are three Individualized Major themes with a sufficient concensus among faculty advisors over the core content and well-developed advising outlines that we refer to them as "structured Individualized Majors." This means that students who wish to pursue these major themes do not have to make a formal presentation before the IMJR Committee if their proposals conform to the advising outlines. However, students must comply with all other requirements of the IMJR admissions proposal: prepare a complete plan of study, statement of purpose, and obtain approval from three faculty advisor/sponsors.

Other Individualized Major Themes

The following are recurrent individualized major themes that students have designed at the University of Connecticut (and the departments from which they have typically drawn courses). Students proposing any of these themes (or variations) must prepare an IMJR admissions proposal (plan of study, statement of purpose), obtain approval from three faculty advisor/sponsors, and make a short presentation to the Individualized Major Committee:
